Caves & Countryside
The countryside around Artà is simply stunning.
Llevant Nature Reserve is renowned for its remote and unspoiled beaches, and is great for hiking and bird-watching. A narrow road takes you to the top of the reserve where the views overlooking the Bay of Alcudia are astounding. The road then drops down to a remote church, the Ermita de Betlem. The Artà Caves are world-famous - see below for more info. |
Cuevas de Artà
The Artà Caves are among the most spectacular in Europe boasting not only stunning natural features but also a rich history. The biggest stalagmite is 22m high and the caves are divided into several areas known as Inferno, Purgaturio and Paradisio. Special lighting creates a really magical experience.
The Caves were once a hide-out for pirates and smugglers and visitors have included writers such as Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas and Jules Verne, for whom Arta's caves allegedly provided the inspiration for 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'.
